Flippin good! : Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle


I have no idea what goes into the sauce that makes the Bak Chor Mee at Seng Kee so good. To be honest, i was expecting something very normal. It’s just Bak Chor Mee after all.

IMG_1510Perhaps that’s where i made the worst assumption. Bak Chor Mee isn’t a simple dish. There are so many aspects of the dish that can be tweaked, making the dish a very variable one and therefore harder to master when it comes to preparing it. A good bowl of Bak Chor Mee needs to have good egg noodles. I like mine springy and frilly, like fine strips of ribbon. Then there’s the soup. It has to be savoury and i find those with the precipitations of pork in the soup especially tasty. Finally, the sauce that comes with dry noodles is the real deciding factor of whether it’s a good or bad bowl of Bak Chor Mee. Some sauces can be too oily and salty, or too sweet. Ketchup sauce is a no-go for Bak Chor Mee!!


That being said, Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee has got everything right, from the noodles to the soup, and the special sauce that just makes this bowl of noodles stand out from the rest! After a good toss to mix the noodles and the sauce, my bowl of frilly mee pok was glazed in a coat of caramel brown. There’s no need for a lot of toppings here, for the noodles and sauce were good enough to be eaten on its own. Overall, one of the best Bak Chor Mee i’ve had so far.


Apart from the yummy factor, the Uncle at Seng Kee puts on quite a show before even serving up his bowls of noodles. And by show, i mean watching your empty bowl get tossed up nearly 7 feet high before an amazing and precise catch by the Uncle. I forgot to ask the Uncle why he even tosses his bowls in the air in the first place. Perhaps it’s to dry the bowls before putting the noodles in. Or it could be just a form of entertainment for the people in the long queue!

Just another bowl of Bak Chor Mee? Not at all! Apart from the flippin bowls, it’s really flippin good!
