Hawker Pasta! : Grill & Pasta

I’ve always been a sceptic when it comes to eating western food in hawker centres. It’s often overpriced and essentially just a meal of reheated frozen foods. Anyway, i’m pretty sure that the street vendors of the past didn’t sell burgers and fries in Singapore!

Sembawang Hill Food Centre is a hawker centre i’d go to once in a while. I usually stick to the Fried Kuay Teow or Chwee Kueh but i was in the mood for something not-so-local. And then i came across several tables of people twirling plates of pasta with their forks and i figured that there must be a stall that sells good pasta nearby!

The quality of  pasta at Grill & Pasta well exceeds that of many of the popular pasta joints in shopping malls. For the same (or less) price, you’d be able to get a pretty decent plate of pasta, both in presentation , taste and portion. I ordered a plate of Gamberoni (Italian for large prawns) and had decided to set my expectations at a low considering my previous encounters with lousy pasta in hawker centres. To my unexpected delight, i was greeted with a really large plate of linguine pasta and prawns, doused in a pastel white base, and sprinkled with shredded cheese and coriander. I must say that the simple touch of sprinkling shredded coriander on the top does make the whole dish look that tad bit more atas.

The  base of the Gamberoni was smooth and creamy. I don’t know about you, but when the base gets too creamy, i find it quite difficult to swallow it after a while. However, i felt that the base of the Gamberoni was just right and despite the large portion, i could easily finish it without feeling queasy.

If you’re not a fan of the creamy base, then perhaps the tomato based pastas will suit you better. I also ordered the Pasta and Salmon to check out the other aspect of the stall – the “Grill” portion. The salmon was perfectly seared and went well with the creamy sauce. The penne pasta was a good choice for the dish, as the hollow nature of the pasta held more  tomato sauce. Overall, this dish was a pretty balanced one! With broccoli, salmon and pasta, you’ve already covered most of the recommended food groups haha.

Great pasta in a hawker centre! My new favourite at Sembawang Hill Food Centre!

  1. I’ve made it a point never to eat western food at hawker centres, but this looks divine! If I’m ever in that area, I’ll definitely try their salmon and penne pasta 🙂
